Our name comes from Lord Horatio Nelson, (1758–1805), a celebrated British naval commander whose daring strategies and leadership solidified Britain's dominance at sea during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born in Norfolk, England, Nelson joined the Royal Navy at 12 and quickly rose through the ranks due to his courage and tactical brilliance.
Nelson's most famous and final victory came at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Napoleon planned to invade Britain with combined French and Spanish forces.
The British Navy, commanded by Nelson, pursued the French until they encountered each other in bad weather. The French Navy had more ships and more troops, and their commander, Villeneuve, ordered his ships to form a single line facing north to broadside the British. Nelson divided his fleet into two squadrons and attacked the enemy fleet head-on. This was extremely dangerous since it prevented them from returning fire as they approached. But eventually, the British ships broke through the enemy lines, many dying in ship-to-ship fighting. The French/ Spanish retreated, and Villeneuve himself was captured. The British lost no ships in the engagement, and this put an end to Napoleon's ambitions to attack Britain, though sniper fire killed Nelson himself during the battle.
We chose our name to embody bravery and unconventional tactics.
